Its employees have skills, knowledge, needs, expectations and behavior. These two set of factors organizational and organismic interact and over time establishes roles, norms, and values pertaining to work. It is this totality of the various levels of interacting forces around the focal concern for work, which is labeled as work culture. The work culture also has its roots from the socio-cultural values and systemic features of the surrounding milieu. Work and organizational cultures are subsets of the larger societal culture. While each organization has its own work culture, two patterns are distinct: soft and synergetic, representing the extremes of a broadly conceived continuum of work. Soft work culture means that everybody in the organization is complacent enough and the motivation level of the employees to do something new is very less. The soft culture is not a desirable state of an organization in the synergetic work culture, socio-cultural values are utilized to mobilize and motivate manpower. If organizational culture is conducive to excellence at work, high productivity, the centrality of work in employees life space and a high quality of work life, the organization is said to have a work-conducive culture otherwise a non work-culture. If an organization enforces strong work norms, maintains strict work disciplines and makes profits, but neglects and exploits its human resources the organization is said to possess an amoral work-centric culture. The employees lack involvement, commitment and desire to do something innovative in this kind of culture. Similarly if an organization neglects the social needs of its employees in achieving technological excellence, it is said to be working under technocratic culture. The criteria which determines the centrality of work for an individual are job affect and job clarity, time to devote to work i.e. work pressure, job and life satisfaction, value addition from the job, peace of mind, working conditions, up-to-date technology, superior-subordinate relationship, reinforcement (reward for hard work), status/prestige associated with the position/designation, extent of responsibility and freedom for making decisions, security of job and last but not the least money. Your Home Base Online Ah, got a little push back from last weeks post about how writers shouldnt post articles or try to sell books without an online presence. I love pushing those buttons. Some thought writing was about the creativity, not necessarily about the sales. They purported the webpage as almost selling out, and that the artist need not tie himself to an online page. Kurt Donald Cobain :: Biography

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20, 1976 in Hoquaim, a small town south-west of Seattle. When he was about six months old he moved to Arberdeen and spent most of his childhood there. His parents divorced when he was seven years old. Cobain did not handle the divorce well. Cobain said that he never felt loved or secure again (Ronson, 1996). He became anti-social and withdrawn after the divorce. Cobain was passed around to several relatives and even lived under a bridge at one point. After Cobain’s parent’s divorced, he lived with his mom in a trailer park for a year. Cobain then lived with his father in Montesano. His father made him participate in sports. Cobain would intentionally not perform well while playing sports to get back at his dad. Cobain decided to learn how to play guitar instead of playing sports. He enjoyed reading and doing other artistic activities. Cobain’s interests made him a target for bullies. (Wilson, 1996) Cobain was a sickly child. â€Å"As an infant, he suffered from chronic bronchitis and scoliosis, and, by the age of seven, he was being prescribed both Ritalin and sedatives to allow him to sleep† (Headlam, 1996). Cobain complained of burning stomach pain that kept him from participating in gym class. In 1985 Cobain started the band Nirvana. The band went through several changes before finally becoming Nirvana. In 1987 the band was playing in several locations. In 1988 the band landed their first record deal. Cobain’s music mainstreamed the grunge sound. Nirvana rose very quickly to become stars. â€Å"Nirvana was, briefly, the most popular band in the world largely because of the cult of personality that grew around Cobain† (Headlam, 1996). After Nirvana released the album Nevermind, Cobain married Courtney Love. â€Å"Love shared Cobain’s penchant for self-destruction, but none of his ambivalence about fame. Together they went on a drug taking spree that resulted a few times in Cobain nearly dying and Love taking heroin during her pregnancy† (Headlam, 1996). Cobain claimed that the birth of his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, made him a different man. He claimed that he was a doting father and husband. It is believed that the drug use continued though. â€Å"On March 5th , 1994 Cobain was rushed to the hospital in a coma after an unsuccessful suicide bid in which he washed down about fifty prescription painkillers with champagne† (Ronson, 1996). Cars powered by electric power briefly appeared at the turn of the 20th century, but largely disappeared from use until the turn of the 21st century. The early history of the automobile can be divided into a number of eras, based on the prevalent means of propulsion. Later periods were defined by trends in exterior styling, and size and utility preferences. 1. 1HISTORY OF CARS Old Engraving depicting the 1771 crash of Nicolas Joseph Cugnot’s steam-powered car into a stone wall. The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide. Starting with the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle that had been drawn up by both Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton. In 1769, the very first self-propelled road vehicle was a military tractor invented by French engineer and mechanic, Nicolas Joseph Cugnot (1725 – 1804). Cugnot used a steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin. It was used by the French Army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 1/2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front (see engraving above). The following year (1770), Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried four passengers. Early Electric Cars Steam engines were not the only engines used in early automobiles. Vehicles with electrical engines were also invented. Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson of Scotland invented the first electric carriage. Electric cars used rechargeable batteries that powered a small electric motor. The vehicles were heavy, slow, expensive, and needed to stop for recharging frequently. Professor William Stanton. CONSUMER PERCEPTION The term perception refers to the complete act of ‘perceiving’ and involving of the psychological factors. Perception is the process by which the mind receives organizes and interprets a particular thing. It is estimated that 90 percent of the stimuli that the individual perceives come through sight and the rest from learning. Price is another element of marketing mix where perception has its implication. The basis of perception We know that sight perception depends on the flow of photons in through the pupils and absorbed in the retina. Therefore with the operation of our senses we do know there is something there can and is influencing the sensory mechanisms within ourselves but we do not necessarily know what it is that is causing the sense of experience. This gives rise to two levels of perception. The first is called immediate perception and is totally physical the operation of the physical universe following its mechanistic path ways, some of which happen to occur as neural events in our brain. The second level of perception is the interpretative perception where our psychology and attention is implicated in the perceptual act. Immediate perception is direct mediated only by physiology of perceiving species. Moving beyond immediate perception such as when a person attends to what they are perceiving, then all the well known aspects come to the fore. The obvious consequence is that we do not necessarily perceive that which we immediately perceive. The mechanism of immediate perception area set of physical events in the physical universe. The external reality is generating a perpetual field that is influencing the eye, which in turn is influencing the neurons of the visual cortex. The visual cortex is the reacting part. The interaction of the visual cortex with other parts of the brain and central nervous systems represented by the arrows to thought and emotion is the beginning of the analysis of the complete act of perception involving the emotive and interpretative elements. This model of immediate perception says that we immediately perceive reality via the effect a perceptual field has no sensory apparatus of our physiology. The study of consumers helps firm and organizations improve their marketing strategies by understanding issues such as: The psychology of how consumers think, feel, reason, and select between different alternatives ( e. g. brands, products). The psychology of how the consumer is influenced by his or her environment (e. g. , culture, family, signs, media). The behavior of consumers while shopping or making other marketing decisions. Limitations in consumer knowledge or information processing abilities influence decisions and marketing outcome. How consumer motivation and decision strategies differ between products that differ in their level of importance or interest that they entail for the consumer. How marketers can adopt and improve their marketing campaigns and marketing strategies to more effectively reach the consumer. Understanding these issues help us adopt our strategies by taking the consumer into consideration. We also learn that consumer’s will sometimes be persuaded more by logical arguments, but at other times will be persuaded more by emotional or symbolic appeals. By understanding the consumer, we will be able to make a more informed decision as to which strategy to employ. CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR One official definition of consumer behavior is â€Å"The study of individuals groups, or organizations and the processes they use to select, secure, use, dispose of products, services experiences or idea to satisfy needs and the impacts that these processes have on the consumer and society. † This definition brings up some useful points. ?Behavior occurs either for the individual, or in the context of a group (e. g. , friend’s influence what kinds of clothes person wears) or an organization (people on the job make decisions as to which products the firm should use). ?Consumer behaviour involves the use and disposal of products as well as the study of how they are purchased. Product use is often of great interest to the marketer, because this may influence how a product is best positioned or how we can encourage increased consumption. Since many environmental problems result from product disposal (e. g. , motor oil being sent to sewage systems to save the recycling fee, or garbage piling up at landfill) this is also an area of interest. ?Customer behavior involves services and ideas as well as tangible products. ?The impact of consumer behavior on society is also of relevance. For example, aggressive marketing of high fat foods or aggressive marketing of easy credit may be serious repercussions for the national health and economy. There are several units in the market that can be analyzed. The main trust in this course is the consumer. However we will also need to analyze our own firm’s strengths and weaknesses and those of competing firms. The issue of this case is to know if the engineer-contractor is responsible for the turbid water of the lake. Before answering the question, we have to know all the elements of the case. The question is why we have turbid water after expensive work done by professional, is it the company fault or is it another factor. The community hired scientific consultants to make some quick tests of the water and they determined that the year round-turbidity was due to fine clay particles, which came from an abandoned factory. There were almost no algae and the problem was due to a great amount of suspended mineral particles. It wasnt a biological problem. On this base, the community engaged an excellent and expensive engineering contracting firm in order to stop the run off of the clay into the lake. They did their work, and the lake was not turbid until the next spring. During all the summer the water was turbid, reaching a peak by early summer. Although the lake water seemed to clear up over the winter and early spring of the following year, the turbid water was back again by mid-spring. The community blamed the engineering firm of having done a bad work. The engineering firm claims that it wasnt their fault. What is the truth? How can we explain that the water became turbid again? This problem can easily be explained scientifically. The high concentration of clay particles suspended in the water makes the water very turbid. These particles scatter and absorb light, and then the light cannot penetrate into the water. In a very high turbid lake, the biological activity is very limited due to the lack of light. One such example of patriotism is that practiced by those that have unconditional love for their country and will blindly follow the countries policies without opposition and will see others that opposed a certain idea as a traitor or being unpatriotic. Other groups of people demonstrate their patriotism by demonstrating it in form of certain symbols like wearing and displaying the flag, singing patriotic songs or the national anthem. There are others that show their patriotism by protesting and criticizing the unjust policies of a nation in order to help keep the nation in check and not blindly follow unjust policies. Accord to the dictionary defines loyalty as the quality of being loyal to someone or something. and loyal as giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution. However many times a person’s loyalty can be in a conflict. For example if a person is loyal to the United States but the new government starts making decisions that the individual does not agree with now he can keep on following without speaking up because of his loyalty to the government as well or he can protest against poor policies because those decisions made by those in power are hurting the United States. In hi s mind he is still being loyal to the United States by protesting and help shape better policies but by others he may be seen as a traitor.
